Fallout 76 – How to Mule/swap items between characters without Fallout 1st (paid) on PC

Fallout 76’s weight limit, while understandable, makes it rather limiting on how much your character can carry or store. If you are used to Fallout 4, where you have unlimited stash, unlimited skillset, Fallout 76 seems to be designed to give you limit.

Naturally, a situation would arise when your heavy build would get a nice rifle, or visa versa and you want the other character to get it. Naturally, it’s a time for Mule and not surprisingly, Bathesta didn’t make it easy.

Disclaimer
First, the safest way to do this is to get a friend that you trust. Swap the item with your friend, swap character. Unfortunately, without a chat function, Bethesda didn’t really make it easy to make friends either.

The second way (I know I said this in the title) is using a private server by subscribing to Fallout 1st. While this wouldn’t break the bank, not everyone can or wants to subscribe. But in case you do have a subscription – quick summary of how to do this, drop the item you want to swap into a “container” – Mailbox, suitcase, steel box, any item generated would do the job. Log out, log back in with another character, and your item would be there, for about 15 mins from what I’ve heard.

So to the main topic. – Disclaimer This is not a guaranteed method, so prepared for it to fail sometimes. I recommend practicing a few times with small items like junks and also do it when you have more than 30 mins.

  1. Join any server with the mule (the character receiving the item)
  2. Join any team. – but ideally that that has 2 in it before you join.
    • Team with just you won’t work, and team with one or 3 both carries its own risk, but you can try it).
  3. Stay on the server for a little bit (10 mins or so, but fully tested).
  4. While waiting for step 3, locate a target container – Ideally one that says 0/0 as this is unlimited storage, easy to get to, and has low foot traffic.
  5. Once you find a location, log out of the game to the desktop – NOT TO MAIN MENU.
  6. Once on your desktop, re-login to the game with the second character (with the item you want to transfer). If it worked, the game will start with “Joining a team” and the login button should say “join the team”.
  7. If this worked, move the second character to your secret location in step 4.
  8. If you are ready to go ahead with the swap, drop the item into your storage box and swap the character. (repeat step 5 and 6).
  9. If it worked, when you try to re-login, you will be told you have joined a team – meaning that you have logged into the same server that you left.
  10. IF THIS DID NOT WORK – You still have a chance. If you didn’t see the joining a team message or the item wasn’t where you left it, you didn’t log into the right server. There really is one thing you can do, and that’s server-hopping. Log out this time to the main menu and re-log in. Check the container and if you didn’t see the items, try it again. (This is why I originally recommended that you try this when you have some time. If you are lucky, one of the times you log in, you will be back on the server that you left the items. Be patient, as this might require you a few logins, but at some point, you may have to give up.

Good luck, and you may need a little bit of luck.

  1. unless its something i m going to use i dump Legendary Gear. The caps you get isn t worth the weight I don t think the game should encourage people to use mules. Dump your stash and sell those legendary items for cheap. Chances are they are pretty useless. Clear out your junk and ammo. Keep what you realistically use and you won t have these problems

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts – I’m not super good at organising, and I have built different character with different play style and certain gears are definitely suited that way. I’ve always respected players who can min/max the hell out of their account, but I’ve always been a type of player who enjoys variety, so something like this has been pretty important for me. 🙂
