In any deck/team building games the act of building the deck you are playing is possibly the key to win. With the lack of similar resource, I thought I would share my step by step guide on how I build the game. – This is the same methodology I’ve used and is really flexible in almost any situation – Magic the gathering, Heatstone, Undead nation (to a point) to name a few.
Step 1 – Figure out the game. Though it sounds dumb, you have to figure out how the game works and what you need to win. Fortunately for GoW, the aim is to simply kill (eliminate all cards) of your opponents.
Step 2 – Figure out how you are going to achieve this. – With GoW, I see two paths to achieve this. First is to kill via skulls, and the second is via magic (Skills). (If you are game, you can try using poison, but… let’s skip that for now).
Step 3 – Now that you decided on the how, pick the first character that will be the key player. – If you are going down the skull path, you may use your main character, while going down the magic path will open you up to the whole selection of the game.
Note, while you can technically pick any monster, you probably will end up picking one that ultimately deals damage.
Step 4 – Find and pick complimentary monsters that will support the main monster.
Support can mean many things and it also depends on your playing style.
For example, if you are trying to win via Skull, support will mean a) any monster who can boost your attack (e.g, Luther), b) any monster who can create skulls (e.g, Skeleton), c) healers, including those that gives shield to keep the damage dealer alive and finally d) the generators (as the game calls it in the troop role filter) who can remove gems.
This generator has two purpose in the game. First, it generates mana, allowing you to do stuff and second, the more you can cycle through the board, the more chances you have of another skull appearing.
Step 5 – mix and match the complimentary member. The things I try to consider is to pick units that tries to cover all gem colours, so you are not “wasting” any matches. However, I also would acknowledge that depending on your build, you will take the pick of the character over colour spread.
