Undead Nation – DPS vs Power?

It took me a little while before I fully understood the value the game was presenting – DPS and Power. Until I read a post in the forum, which explained the formula.

DPS = Power / Speed.

Because I’m a numbers person, this made sense, but I wanted to break down what this means to the game.

To illustrate this, let’s compare two characters

  1. Power 100, Speed 1 – DPS = 100
  2. Power 200, Speed 0.5 – DPS = 100

Power is the value (I’m guessing they are using this as raw number) how much the each strike damages.

Speed (from what I can see, is the number in seconds that each strike takes – so for example,  Hank has a speed of 5, because it takes him 5 seconds for him to strike.

DPS therefore, is the amount of damage that you can deal per second (DPS is Damage per second, if you didn’t know).

OK OK, thanks for the mansplaing, as my Mrs will say, what’s the big deal.

Because sometimes, you don’t have a second chance. – and for this, I think that this game has done this part pretty brilliantly.

Let’s take an Jay vs Jay scenario. There’s a fairly good chance that you will get into this situation. But because of his second perk, he can shoot 10% faster compared to the first star. This means that when you put a 1 star against a 2 star, you are nearly guaranteed that the 2 star will take the 1 star out (ignoring the damage bonus in this scenario).

The more important scenario is the likes of Kyle and Soldier #85 who has enemy cancellation perks – if your strikes can hit before the enemy does, you can essentially lock them. – As a matter of fact, this happened to me with my Wilma vs Kyle. While Wilma was trying to swing her attack, Kyle reset her move, and this just slowly wittled her down

The other angle to consider is when you are going against survivors like Amanda or Soldier #17, who has a form of “dodge” capability. For these kinds of characters, the cleaner solid hits you get, the quicker you take them down.

Just keep an eye on a few battles – if your lineup aren’t attuned, you can very well get into a situation where character like Wilma or Julia barely gets a chance to get into position to make a strike and the wave is over and moving to the next room – you might benefit from building a better speed team in such situaiton.

Happy hunting!
